Flu Resources

Important information for families about preventing spread of the flu is listed below. It is not too late to get a flu vaccine from your healthcare provider. In addition to frequent hand washing with soap and water or if not available, the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers helps prevent the spread of flu. You should contact your healthcare provider if your child gets sick. If your child has flu symptoms, they should stay home from school and rest until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.

Substance Use Prevention

West Springfield is dedicated to preventing underage substance use and this is why the district has partnered with the West Springfield CARE Coalition (Collaborative Accountability Reaches Everyone) to provide uptodate, evidence-based, substance use and abuse information to help families and teens navigate adolescence as well as they are able without the damaging effects of substances.

One of the biggest risk factors for drug dependency in adulthood is early exposure and initiation of drug use.  It’s a fact – children whose parents talk to them about the risks of alcohol and other drugs are much less likely to use them.  Visit the CARE website for tips on how to speak with children about difficult topics such as substance use and mental health, and fact sheets on various substances so that you can stay informed as a parent.

Screening

Massachusetts School Health law (M.G.L. Chapter 71, Section 57 and 105 CMR 200.000) requires schools to provide regular health screenings for students. Screenings are not diagnostic in nature. They are designed simply to indicate students who may need further attention. A referral for follow up will be sent to families along with screening results when indicated. If you receive a referral for screening follow up, you should contact your child’s pediatrician as soon as possible. You should return the screening referral to the school nurse once your child has been seen by their primary provider. If you have any questions about the screening, you should contact your child’s school nurse.

For details on school based screenings, see below:

  • Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT): This substance abuse screening takes place in 7th and 9th grades.

  • Vision: Vision screening is done yearly in grades Pre-K through 5, and in grades 7 and 9.

  • Hearing: Hearing screening is done yearly in grades K through 3, and in grades 7 and 9.

  • Postural Screening: The state of Massachusetts mandates that all students in grades 5 through 9 be screened for scoliosis each school year.

  • Growth Screening: Heights and weights are measured and body mass index (BMI) is calculated on children in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10.

Parents/guardians may waive a screening by submitting a written request to the school nurse at the start of each school year.

You may request a screening at any time if you are concerned your child has a problem with vision, hearing, posture, or growth.
